Scene Description: Source caption: " Constantine Basilica in the German town Trier. Part of an engraving from the 1646 book "Topographia Archiepiscopatuum Moguntinensis", which probably relied on a woodcut from 1548/1550. The coloration is not from the original engraving and was added to highlight the building."

Scene Description: the basilica appears at the back, towards the right of the tallest tower, and has a crenellated wall -- Source caption: [Matthäus Merian the Elder's] "Engraving from 1646. At the top the coats of arms of the Prince-Elector Philipp Christoph von Sötern. The engraving closely resembles a woodcut from 1548. While providing more details than the woodcut, the engraving does not show changes of the view between 1548 and 1646."

The baptismal font in the old basilica built by emperor Constantine ca. 305 in Trier is actually a composite object made up of what looks like an original capitel from the old church, now being used as the base on which has been installed a modern-looking iron basin. The font is located towards the west end of the nave.
