Font Notes:
There is an entry for Hope [under Dinmore] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO5152/hope-under-dinmore/] [accessed 19 April 2024]. A font here is described and illustrated in the inventory of Herefordshire (1931-1934, vol. III: xxxvi, 68 and pl. 117): "Font[...]: octagonal bowl with moulded upper and lower rim and concave soffit with angle ribs; each face of bowl with a moulded cinquefoiled arch with foliated spandrels and resting on attached shafts; under each arch a seated figure, two representing SS. Peter and Paul, others probably Evangelists, perhaps St. John the Baptist and another figure; stem with panelled sides and angled ribs and moulded base, probably late 13th century." This same source (ibid.) describes the font cover: "Cover with turned central post and supporting brackets, late 17th-century." Described and illustrated in Thurlby (1980: 160-163): octagonal baptismal font of the 13th century; the sides of the basin are decorated with an arcade of cinquefoil arches, each housing a seated figure; Thurlby identifies these figures as Christ, John the Baptist and the Apostles; Thurlby (ibid., p. 160) identifies John the Baptist, Peter, Paul, Philip and, perhaps, James the Great, by their instruments, and argues that, although the seated figure between Peter and Paul lacks the cruciferous nimbus. "He is to be identified as Christ". The lack of the nimbus is perhaps not so surprising since it is absent from all the other figures, and, [...], is omitted from another Christ figure in the West Country School". The spandrels of the arcade "are filled with symmetrically arranged stiff-leaf foliage", and the base consists of "a stem with panelled sides and angle ribs and a water-holding base" (ibid.) The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO5105852826] notes: "Parish church. C14 or earlier origins, part rebuilt C18, restored 1879- 1896 [...] The stone font is probably late C13 and has an octagonal bowl with cusped arcading, foliated spandrels and relief carvings of Christ, St Peter and St Paul and others. The stem is panelled and moulded and there is a late C17 cover."
