INFORMATION

FontID: 08727PAM
Church/Chapel: [original church unknown]
Country Name: Spain
Location: Navarra, Comunidad Foral de Navarra
Directions to Site: The building known locally as "Colegio Huarte" is located in Calle Mayor no. 54, in the Casco Viejo [old town] of Pamplona
Font Location in Church: In the patio of a private residence
Century and Period: 13th - 16th century, Medieval
On-site notes: baptismal font -perhaps of the medieval period- consisting of a hemispherical basin raised on a a short round pedestaland a square lower base; the sides of the basin are ornamented with ribbed pattern and there are remains of a moulding at the upper rim; the base is decorated with a combination torus-scotia-torus; the lower base is square and plain {NB: the pedestal base may not be the original of this font]. There is no record available of the origin of this font; it is now [August 2003] serving as a patio ornament in the private residence locally known as "Colegio Huarte" [the name originates in the function this building served throughout the 19th and early-20th centuries, an educational institution with some illustriuous pupils (Pio Baroja?)]. The font is cracked and its use as planter is contributing to its further deterioration. [We are grateful to Javier Torrens, of Pamplona, Spain, for his notes on and photographs of this font]
