Jena No. 1

Baptismal font of the Gothic period; this font was originally from the Stadtkirche St. Michael in Jena, but was moved to the church of St. Peter in Lobeda in 1968, where it is located just left of the altar [source: http://www.thur.de/org/tlz/haus42.html]. Illustrated in Sciurie (2000: 33, 45, 63): chalice-shaped font; the upper basin sides are plain; lower down, each side of the octagonal basin has a round arch with a trefoil window in it; the stem of the base is very short and narrow; the lower base is octagonal and splayed, wider than the basin; the upper part of it is ornamented with a Gothic tracery motif, all different (Gothic "S", tetrafoil, three-srm "S", etc.); these are followed down by a large scotia; the bottom part is vertical and plain. Like many of the fonts of this area, the basin is now covered with an ironwork screen.
