Font Notes:
Described in Catalunya romànica (1984- ) as the baptismal font originally from the church of the monastery of St. Quirc, now half-built into the south wall of the 19th-century parish church of the same advocation; the limestone hemispherical basin has a band of ornamentation on the upper side containing floral, foliage and circular motifs; it rests on a short circular pedestal base; the surface of the stone has been polished recently. This same source (ibid.) hesitates to date it any earlier than the end of the 13th century, with a possible date as late as the 14th century. Described and illustrated in Badia-Homs (2007), who suggests the ornate staff top that appears on the upper band represents the staff of the abbot of St. Quirc. [NB: the situation here is somewhat confusing. The original monastery may date to the late-8th century, but most of the monastery church dates to the early-12th, as it was consecrated in 1123 by the bishop of Gerona, at which time the smaller church of Santa Maria nearby is also mentioned, though its role vis-a-vis the monastery church is not clear. The article SANCTI CIRICI DE COLERA / SANT QUIRZE DE COLERA (ALT EMPORDA, GIRONA). ESTUDIO PRELIMINAR DEL CONJUNTO MONASTICO, SIGLOS VIII AL XVI] by Gisela Ripoll [et alii] [https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/295768] [accessed 27 May 2019] notes: "Se trata de un conjunto de grandes dimensiones, dotado de una iglesia parroquial y una monástica además de todas las dependencias del monasterio y una necrópolis, con una dilatada cronología, desde el siglo VIII hasta el siglo XVI, momento en que la comunidad monástica se traslada", stating that two churches co-existed in the monastery compound, one monastic and the other, Santa Maria, parochial.
