The present baptismal font in this church consists of a wooden basin raised on a carved baluster-shaped marble pedestal base and a stylophore couchant lion of the same material holding in its front paws a shield with an episcopal mitre on it. The wooden cover is of the rim-buffet type, polygonal with a pyramidal top and a figural finial [NB: although it appears to be a Baptism of Christ scene at first sight, one of the sources below identifyes the figures in the finial as St. Michael and the patron saint of the church, St. Leo of Catania]. The entry for Saracena in www.calabria.org.uk [accessed 5 May 2019] notes: "La base del fonte battesimale, del 1592, scolpita in pietra da scalpellini locali, è formata da un leone che, in posizione accovacciata, regge tra le zampe lo stemma della chiesa (mitra vescovile)." The page of the Comune di Saracena [www.comune.saracena.cs.it/] notes: "Subito dopo l'ingresso, sul lato sinistro, v'è il Fonte Battesimale, realizzato nel XVI° secolo, formato per metà di pietra e per metà di legno. La base, interamente ..." [NB: broken link [404 error] when accessed 5 May 2019]. The entry in Calabriaportal [www.calabriaportal.com/saracena/3623-saracena-chiesa-di-san-leone.html] [accessed 5 May 2019] mentions the stone font and its wooden cover, the later 17thC and with statues of St. Michael and the patron saint of the church now, St. Leo of Catania.
