Pieve Fosciana

The baptismal font in this church may be made up of components from two different periods: the basin itself and the "casing" in which it sits now; the source [cf. infra] describes it as 'hidden' behind a parapet of red and white marble divided into panels by slender Romanesque-style columns, a fragment of the former choir enclosure ["La vasca altomedievale in pietra, nella quale furono battezzate generazioni di cristiani della Garfagnana, è nascosta da un paramento in marmo bianco e rosso, diviso da colonnine romaniche, che è frammento del distrutto recinto corale"]. The entry for this church in the Italian Wikipedia [https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pieve_di_San_Giovanni_Battista_(Pieve_Fosciana)] [accessed 26 May 2025] notes that the font was originally from the early church documented in 764, and that it was moved and partly built into the north wall of the chancel in 1745: "All'edificio primitivo, ricordato in un documento del 764, appartiene la vasca battesimale di pietra ad immersione, che nel 1745 è tolta dal presbiterio, inserita sulla parete sinistra e protetta da parti del distrutto recinto presbiteriale trecentesco."
