Noted in Salmi (1972). In Gurrieri (1975). Described and illustrated in Garzelli (2002: 9-11 and fig. 6) as a baptismal font of the immersion raised-tank type made in 1226 by Lanfranco Bigarelli [aka Lanfranco da Como]; it is somewhat similar to the one at the Battistero di Pisa in general shape and size, but Pistoia's basin is rounded on the inside and square on the outside, whereas Pisa is octagonal both inside and out, and has a central element absent in Pistoia's; they both have the additional cylindrical basinettes at 90-degree angles, as well as the tiled exterior panels. Garzelli (ibid.) shows an image of the font during the 1965 restoration. The Comune di Pistoia has a web entry with general information and an image of the font [www.comune.pistoia.it] available both in English and Italian [NB: this latter source gives the size of the corner wells as 80 cm deep by 75 cm in diameter]. Illustrated in a set of digital photographs[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Baptistry_(Pistoia)_-_Baptismal_font] [accessed 25 May 2025]
