Church Notes: According to Gentili (2001: 36) the baptistery was originally a "sacello" [Latin=sacellum], or little sacred enclosure, 18 m from the SE salient of the Chgeisa Cattedrale di Santa Tecla. It was replaced in the late 16th century by the present Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista.
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Gentili (2001: 38-46 and figs. 4-17) as a magnificent bronze baptismal font made by the brothers Pierpaolo and Tarquinio Jiacometti di Recanati in 1629; the round basin is mounted on four standing young bulls laid out in cruciform manner; the sides of the basin are ornamented with cherubs and garlands. Tall cylindrical cover topped by a hemispherical dome and a finial consisting of a statue of Christ with raised arms; there are four large statues on the vertical sides of the cover, each exactly above one of the bullocks of the base [L-->R]: 1)John the Baptist, just below Christ, on the front; 2)Hope, the theological virtue; Faith, the theological virtue; Charity, the theological virtue; the panels of the sides of the cover are ornamented with scenes: 1)preaching by the Baptist; 2)miraculous cure of the Syrian Naaman (2 Kings 5); 3)baptism of Christ; 4)pool of Siloam (John 9: 7). The side of the shallow basin are decorated with garlands and with cherub heads at 90-degree angles; coinciding with the cherubs are four large bulls facing out and standing on a lower base.
