view of context
Scene Description: the plaque marks the location of the 12thC Premonstratensian Nunnery of San Pablo -- It refers to St Radegundis as having lived there, but obviously not the Merovingian saint ["St. Radegunda, also spelled Radegund or Radegundis, French Sainte Radegonde, (died August 13, 587, Poitiers [France]; feast day August 13), queen of the Merovingian king Chlotar I, who left her husband to become a nun and later founded a monastery at Poitiers." source Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia. "St. Radegunda". Encyclopedia Britannica, [27 January 2021], https://www.britannica.com/biography/St-Radegunda. Accessed 27 January 2021." [NB: this legend of Radegundis of Sordillos notes that she died here in 1152 walled in her own cell]

Church Notes: medieval church that may originally been part of the 12thC Premonstratensian Nunnery of San Pablo de Sordillos; much modified since
Described in Bilbao (1996: 199 fn211) as a later [than Romanesque] baptismal ornamented with a key. The present font is probably from the 17th- or 18th-century modifications to what may have been the remain of the original church of the Monasterio Premonstratense [female] de San Pablo; it consists of a round tapering basin decorated with two crossed large keys, surely the symbol of the patron saint, on a bacgound of concave ribbing; sharp moulding at the upper rim; polygonal [octagonal?] pedestal base with moulded ends. The wooden cover is round, flat and plain; modern. [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church here].
