INFORMATION

FontID: 07953ROF
Church/Chapel: Chiesa Madre di Pieve di Roffeno
Country Name: Italy
Location: Bologna, Emilia-Romagna
Directions to Site: Located near Bologna ["Pieve di Roffeno} is actually the name of the town, not that of the church]
Font Location in Church: Inside the church
Church Notes: The Battistero in Pieve di Roffemo is said to be the forst baptistery of the area, probably from the 9th century
Baptismal font made of marble (?) consisting of a cylindrical basin mounted on a narrower cylindrical base; the sides of the basin are ornamented with a vine between two mouldings, as well as a running motif (?) just below it; the underbowl is chamfered and with eight (?) corbel-like brackets all around. The base is ornamented with low-relief foliage motif. The most striking part of the font is the cover: it consists of a hemispherical metal (copper?) dome topped by a tall chimney-like marble (?) appendage that makes the whole font look like a heating implement rather than a baptismal font. [We are grateful to Giorgio Zanetti, of Toronto, Canada, for bringing this font to our attention, and to Luca Giordani, of Bologna, Italy [www.studiogiove.org], for his image of the same] [NB: "Pieve de Roffeno" is the actual name of the town]
