The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 21 April 2021] notes: "Su iglesia está dedicada a San Sebastián. Esta reconstruida sobre otra de base románica, de la que conserva algunos elementos [...] Desde 1605 su pila de bautismo es utilizada para el bautismo de los futuros reyes de España. (Ahora está el del monasterio de Santo Domingo de Madrid)." The entry for this church in the Enciclopedia del romanico... [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_CALERUEGA.pdf] [accessed 21 April 2021] does not mention a font in it. Baptismal font originally from the parish church of San Sebastián in Caleruega; it is a plain basin made of white stone [limestone?] mounted on a square base of probably later date, although much of the upper surface is now covered with a silver lining bearing the Royal Arms of Spain and those of the Dominican Order. Described in Amalia Roales-Nieto y Azañón's "Una pila bautismal histórica" (Madrid: Instituto de Sociología Aplicada, 1990) and abridged in the Order's web site [www.dominicos.org/op/historia/pila.htm]. Described in Mateos (2004: 13) as a baptismal font made of white stone and covered in gold and silver, plain but for the coats of arms of the Royal House and the Dominican Order [="de piedra blanca sin tallar, está recubierta de oro y plata, y lleva las armas reales y las de la Orden Dominica"]. This font, in which St. Dominic [of Guzmán, aka Santo Domingo de Caleruega], became an object of veneration with the sanctification of Dominic in 1234; it was moved first by Alfonso X [1221-1284] to the nuns' convent for safekeeping, where it remained until 1605 when Philip III moved it to Convento de los Dominicos de San Pablo, Valladolid, to use it for the baptism of his son Philip [later Philip IV, 1605-1665]. It was later moved to Madrid, to the safekeeping of the Monasterio de las MM. Dominicas de Santo Domingo el Real, where it is kept at all times except for the baptismas of the members of the royal family when it is taken to the venue. Since the baptism of Philip IV in 1605 it has become the royal font of the kings of Spain [NB: some members of the royal family not baptised in it since have been those born abroad in exile, icluding Juan Carlos I [1938-], who was born in Italy during the Spanish Civil War -- Not clear whether there is another royal font, a silver basin made in the Real Fábrica de Platería, or this is the outer silver sleeve that now covers the old stone font]
