Described and illustrated in Sáenz Rodríguez (2004) and in the Enciclopedia del románico en La Rioja (2008) as a baptismal font consisting of a hemispheric basin of the type produced by the Oja-Tirón workshop, the sides decorated with an acanthus (?) vine, the underbowl with ribbed pattern; this one is raised on a baluster stem uncharacteristic of the type, and a lower base of two volumes, round at the top, square below, probably of later date. It is suggested that this font belonged originally to the Ermita [then Iglesia] of Santa Potamia, in San Jorge or Santurde, a parish within San Millan de la Cogolla, and that it was moved by the abbot Fray Pedro de Arenzana in 1542. Sáenz Rodríguez (ibid.) informs that the font was moved recently [i.e., in 2004] to the baptismal chapel located on the north side, west end, where it now stands next to the 16th-century baptismal font [NB: Sáenz Rodríguez (ibid.) gives the name of the firm and architect responsible for the restoration of the font: Coresal and Oscar Reinares Fernandez, respectively -- the latter either did not know much about Romanesque font design or chose to break away from the canon by installing a baluster stem base for the old basin]]
