INFORMATION

FontID: 07748ALB
Church/Chapel: Iglesia de San Martín de Tours [aka La Panera]
Church Patron Saints: St. Martin of Tours
Country Name: Spain
Location: Logroño, La Rioja
Directions to Site: Located 13 km from Logroño capital [the old chapel is located opposite the parish church, at the foot of the hill]
Font Location in Church: Inside the church at Albelda
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Romanesque
Church Notes: The partly rock-church known as La Panera was, according to López de Silanes Valgañón (2000: 176), a chapel of the old Monasterio de San Martín
Described in López de Silanes Valgañón (2000) as a baptismal font of the 13th century. Described and illustrated in Sáenz Rodríguez (2004) and in the Enciclopedia del románico en La Rioja (2008), as a baptismal font originally from an abandoned hamlet near Villar del Rio, Soria province, from where it was moved to the new church of Albelda in the 1970s; it is dated in these sources to the 12th century. The hemispherical basin has seven very wide arches containing two human figures holding hands and kissing, a potent Greek cross, a pelican, a saddled horse or donkey, a human figure kneeling before a tree or plant, and holding an ax (?), an eight-petal flower, a seven-branch tree (?); the cylindrical pedestal base is made of three very thick roll mouldings; there is repaired damage at one of the sides of the upper rim, the sort consistent with the removal of hardware from the cover.
