Church Notes: cathedral built 1131; consecrated 1267;
Listed in Kininmonth's guide to Sicily (1979?: 99) as a baptismal font of the 12th century ornamented with four lions. Illustrated in Rolf Toman's volume on Romanesque art [to be completed]. The baptismal font, probably of the same date as the cathedral [started ca. 1131] consists of a roughly cylindrical basin ornamented adorned with four prominent passant lions at 90-degree angles; the stem of the base, a girdled torsade column, appears round as well [NB: at some point in the past it was mounted on a rectangular lower base].
