Early Christian (4th? / 6thC?) baptistery ornamented with beautiful mosaic work; the cross-shaped baptismal font has two interior steps. The font is basically cruciform un shape, both inside and out, with angular indentations between the four foils of the cross; there are two steps, one on each opposite ends of the cross shaped interior. The font retains some of the white stone [marble?] which lined originally all the sides; it is not clear whether or not any of the mosaic decoration of the baptistery floor was also present on or around the rim of the font. The font and most of the mosaic floor of the baptistery is often kept buried/covered as protection against the flooding and drainage cycles the site is exposed to.
