Font Notes:
A basin in the north-east corner of the crypt at Abu Sarga is said to have served as baptistery in the past. The font is described and illustrated in Mary Magdy Anwar's The Evolution of Different Fonts in the Coptic Churches Throughout the Centuries [https://doi.org/10.4000/medievalista.3348] [accessed 3 November 2023]: "Cylindrical forms without stairs appear in the Old Cairo churches as the one situated in the western of the narthex of Abu Sergah church [...], constructed in limestone sculpted in high relief with cross forms, with a pedestal decorated with crosses surrounded by birds and gazelles, placed inside a niche; it dates back to the 4th century." The font consists of a bucket-shaped (rather than cyclindrical) basin decorated with torus-scotia motifs below the upper rim, and a large treflee Greek cross inscribed in a circle on the front side; raised on a cylindrical base wider than the basin, its sides decorated with a busy pattern of similar crosses, foliage and animals all around. A round wooden flat cover with patterned sides is atop.
