Font Notes:
Described in Arriola Loyola (1996) as a baptismal font of the 16th century in the Platesque [Spanish Renaissance] style. Described and illustrated in Bilbao (35 and fig. 12) as a baptismal font of the 15th-16th century with ornamentation of grotesque ["grutesco"] motifs [NB: later in the same source (ibid.: 96), Bilbao dates the two fonts at Laguardia to the 14th century ["su temprana cronología, el siglo XIV"]; the hemispherical basin has a rope moulding at the upper rim and it is divided into five sections or panels by vertical rope mouldings stemming from the upper rim; at the leftmost side is a cherub; in the next panel is a bird that appears to be drinking from a fountain (?); the centre panel has a coat of arms bearing cardinal or episcopal arms; the next panel to the rightn the centre has a large putto-like cherub and other high-relief motifs; the rightmost has two facing monkeys (?) above two human heads; the back of the basin has been built into the wall [NB: in her later work (1996) Bilbao dates this font and the one at Santa Maria, also in Laguardia, to the 16th century ["ambas de la primera mitad del siglio XVI"]; in the same note Bilbao states that the episcopal coat of arms establishes a relationship with the sponsor of the font [the same shield appears on the the font at Santa Maria in the same town]
