Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1994) as a baptismal font of the medieval period, probably of an early date, consisting of a large hemispherical basin resting on a very short square lower base; the sides of the basin and underbowl ornamented with several bands of geometric motifs: at the top, concentric romboid motifs; the next, chevron forming simple romboids; the next, concentric circles; the next, triangular; on the squat lower base, lions, eagles, a bull. Bilbao (ibid.) cites an entry in López de Guereñu. The decoration on the sides of the basin shows a nice geometric pattern design; the concentric diamond/lozenge pattern on the top band is replicated by the nested-chevron pattern on the band below, with the added blank diamond/lozenge in the spaces between; the bottom band has well-rendered concentric circles on it, in parallel with the concentric diamon/lozenge patter on the upper band; one side of the font, now facing front, has what looks like a single crescent moon carved on top of the geometric patterns; is it a coincidence? Why would a Christian liturgical vessel have such a distinct symbol by itself on it? [NB: moons are often found on medieval baptismal fonts, but normally together with the Sun symbol, stars, etc.] The square base has pairs of semicircular divisions on the sides; two of the pairs contain the symbols of the four Evangelists: one side contains Mark's winged lion on the left, Luke's winged ox on the right; another side contains Matthew's angel on the left, John's eagle on the right; another side contains a pair of inscribed Maltese crosses; the fourth side appears blank, totally eroded now, but may have been carved before. There is no font cover present but there is evidence on the upper rim of anchoring points for an earlier cover.
