Church Notes: Originally a temple for the adoration of the Mayan god Itzam-ná. The Spanish conquerors built there a small chapel or sanctuary ['capilla'] where the Cristo de la Esquipulas ["capilla"] was venerated for many years. The 'capilla' was replaced by a larger temple, originally dedicated to St. Michael until 1944 [source: www.city.com.mx/merida1/ciudad/itzimnai.asp]
The present font bears an inscription dating it to 1689. [NB: we do not have information on the baptismal font of the original "capilla" [chapel, sanctuary] built ca. 1572].
