Apostle or saint - Apostles - St. Andrew - with his cross - fish

Scene Description: this grouping appears to be confuisng; the diagonal arrises appear to create a frame or division that includes only a large saltire cross on the left; the next set of arrisses, to the right of the large saltire cross, includes two fish and a human figure that appears to be holding a smaller slatire cross, but the carving is schematic and crude, which could try to represent a figure with arms crossed and legs extended; since Peter and Sebastian appear to be identified on this underbowl perhaps it would not be too farfetched to identify this one as Andrew

Font Notes:
Described in Bilbao (1994: 80-83 and fig. 46) as a medieval baptismal font of the 13th century [cf. infra]. Baptismal font of stone consisting of a round basin raised on clustered columns and a square lower base with moulded top; the outer surface of the quasi-hemispherical basin is divided horizontally into two areas: sides and underbowl, each again into compartments that house figures and motifs; the basin sides contain: a knight on horseback, facing right, holding the reins with the left hand while the right hand holds a long spear diagonally with the point down; the rider wears rowel spurs [cf. infra]; to the right a human figure holds a banner in his right hand while the left holds a sword, upside-down, by the tip; to the left of the mounted knight, a human figure hands [tied?] before his crotch, with two large arrow heads stuck in his left and right sides; Bilbao (ibid.) suggests St. Sebastian; the underbowl program contains: human figure with large key (St. Peter); saltire or St. Andrew's cross fleurdelysée; human figure, St. Andrew, with X-shaped cross, a bird and two fishes; a large bird. The base is columnar, with one central column and four constructional shafts; the lower base is square and moulded, almost resembling a cushion capital. The carving is in shallow relief and of a rather crude and simplistic execution. The mounted knight uses rowel spurs, which, though documented in England in the 13th century , did not become commonly used until the 14th [https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/14.25.1737/] [accessed 24 November 2017], thereby suggesting a safer date for this font in the latter century [NB: caveat: some sources surmise that rowels may have originated in France or Spain as early as the 10th century, but most sources concur that common use appears only in the 14th]. There is no cover present. The font is now located in the chancel, to the south of the altar; its original location is no documented.
