Listed and illustrated in López de Guereñu [https://photo.araba.eus/s/photoaraba/item/66092] [accessed 7 August 2024] as a baptismal font in the Romanesque style: "Pila bautismal de la iglesia de San Martín de Luco [...] pila bautismal, de estilo románico. La taza presenta dos fajas formadas por círculos concéntricos, dejando entre ellas otra faja más ancha adornada por la intersección de círculos de distinto tamaño, los mayores de los cuales tienen en su interior estrellas". Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1994) as a beautiful medieval baptismal font ornamented in the Mudéjar style, with linked circles which contain stars, as well as stylised wave motifs ["olas geometrizantes"]. Bilbao (ibid.) cites entries in López de Guereñu and Portilla. Listed and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico with date in the 13th century [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/alava_LUKO.pdf] [accessed 26 July 2024]: "interesante y bello ejemplar de pila bautismal románica, datada en el siglo xiii. Sobre una base cuadrada descansa el corto pie cilíndrico, con basa de garras, que sirve de apoyo a la pila. Se trata de una copa de 82 cm de diámetro y 54 cm de altura, muy rica en ornamentación. Recorre el perímetro, en su parte central, una banda ancha de círculos entrecruzados. Los pequeños llevan un círculo ocelado en el interior, motivo que vemos repetido en el interior de las estrellas de ocho puntas, que llevan un punto trepanado en la base de cada una de ellas, y que cobijan los círculos grandes. Este motivo decorativo está inscrito en una hilera de pequeñas cabezas de clavo, en la parte superior e inferior. Es un modelo ornamental que se repite en la pila de la iglesia de la Natividad, en Arkaia. Complementan la ornamentación de esta banda central dos filas de círculos bocelados, una arriba, cerca de la boca, y la otra antes de comenzar la parte baja, donde empieza la forma de la taza. En la subcopa lleva una decoración de olas geométricas que se levantan y rizan como encrespadas por el viento, efecto que se ve acentuado por la inclinación y las cabezas de clavo que las recorren, perdiendo tamaño a medida que ascienden. Dos filas de pequeños motivos la separan del robusto pie. Aunque no es habitual encontrar decoración en el interior de las pilas bautismales, ésta de Luko es una excepción. En la embocadura, en la vertiente interior de la copa, se perfila una ornamentación formada por una banda de rombos alternos: unos muestran punteados a trépano, y otros una línea incisa en el interior. La simbología que subyace en la decoración de estas pilas bautismales fue estudiada en su momento por Garbiñe Bilbao." The font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin of regular proportions and skilfully carved motifs; the wave motifs mentioned in Bilbao ornament the round underbowl, which ends in a narrow moulding (rope?); all motifs are executed in beaded-tape pattern, a narrow band of which ornaments the upper end of the otherwise plain cylindrical stem of the base; the lower base is round-to-square, the upper volume with foliate motifs set on the angles of the square volume. No cover present but there are lead (?) plugs in the upper rim suggesting anchoring points for an earlier cover. [NB: the present base of the altar may have perhaps come from an earlier church here, and is probably 11th-century; according to the emtry in the Enciclopedia del romanico, "se trata de una pieza prerrománica de especial interés, identificada como un tenante de altar por Zoilo Calleja y José Javier López de Ocáriz, quienes publicaron una interesante monografía, datando la pieza en el siglo X."
