L'Églyise fut bâtie en 1840 coumme eune chapelle d'aise pouor les cheins d''la contrée à seule fîn qu'i' n'fûssent pon oblyigis d'aller amont l'Mont Félard pouor aller ès sèrvices dans l'Églyise Pârouaîssiale. Lady Trent 'tait eune Jèrriaise tchi s'mathyit auve Jesse Boot (tchi d'vînt lord pus tard). Oulle empliyit l'maît'-vèrryi Français René Lalique et l'architecte Jèrriais A.B. Grayson tch'înstâllîtent les nouvelles dêcorâtions dans l'églyise en 1934."
Font Notes:
A modern baptismal font made of glass, noted and illustrated in the Société Jersiaise web site [http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/artphoto/glasschurch.html] [accessed 11 January 2008]: "L'Églyise dé St. Matchi au Dou dé D'mi à St. Louothains est mus connu par san mênom Angliais dé “Glass Church”. [NB: although this font does not belong in the Index for obvious chronological reasons, it is listed as a rare and unique version of a baptismal font]. The baptismal font, as well as the altar rail, the cross and the pillars in this church, popularly known as "The Glass Church", were all designed and made by René Lalique and the Jersey architect A.B. Grayson. The works are unique, since the moulds were destroyed afterwards. [source: BBCi homepage for Jersey, Jersey tourist pages, etc.] Judith Pataki (2007) writes of an earlier [mid-19th century] font made of glass, was produced in Hungary "a oneoff [sic] piece is a baptismal font by István Sovánka (1858-1944), an early piece designed for Hungary's Millenial Exhibition of 1896 and conceived in the spirit of that exhibition's national historicism". [NB: the Dorset Business News & Information issue for 20 March 2008 [http://www.dorsetbusiness.co.uk/mostpopular.var.2135026.mostviewed.vicar_asks_for_a_seethrough_font.php] [accessed 30 March 2008] informs: "FURNITURE craftsman Ronald Emett from Bridport has met an unusual request for a church font. Mr Emett, from Ocean Bathrooms, was asked to produce the font for All Saints' Church in Guildford. The vicar requested a font with a glass bowl so that young children gathered around the font could see what was happening through the glass. Ocean Bathrooms found exactly the right bowl from the innovative Roper Rhodes Collection." -- the article is accompanied by an illustration of the font]
