animal - bird - dove - 2 - facing away from each other

Scene Description: seen here in the centre and left: the general shape and the plumage pattern on their bodies may suggest female ring-necked pheasants, but they may have been intended simply as doves by the artesan who carved them

Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1994: 26, 57, 58, 112 and figs. 29, 30) as a medieval baptismal font consisting of a hemispherical basin mounted on a base of twelve constructional shafts, the three facing front with torsade pattern. Bilbao (ibid.: 57-58) describes the ornamentation as a pair of birds surrounded by a protective rope-like shape outside which lurks a monster on each side. Bilbao (ibid.) suggests the birds are doves and offers the mandorla motif as a reference for the protective rope-like motif [NB: although the images provided do not furnish a clear image of the motifs, the "cordón" suggested by Bilbao looks suspiciously like a serpent, in tune perhaps with the other two "monsters" lurking about]. The three shafts at the front of the base are of the torsade type, while the other nine appear plain. Bilbao (ibid.: 57) points out the font at Hereña, in the same region, which has two birds drinking from a vessel in the traditional manner. Bilbao (ibid.: 112) cites entries in López de Guereñu and Portilla. There is no font cover present but the upper rim of the basin retains two metal staples from the earlier anchoring points.
