Baptismal font listed and illustrated in López de Guereñu [https://photo.araba.eus/s/photoaraba/item/66092] [accessed 27 July 2024]: "Pila bautismal de la iglesia de San Román de Arriano. Vista frontal de una pila bautismal de estilo románico; la copa presenta la siguiente disposición decorativa: banda de triángulos inscritos, banda de florones de seis pétalos, círculos radiados y banda de cuadrados cuyos fondos se han rayado creando la decoración de damero. Los pies son dos columnas exentas". Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1994: 31, 111 and fig. 9) as a medieval baptismal font; the sides of the basin are ornamented with incised geometric motifs of several shapes; the pedestal base has four constructional colonnettes around a core. Bilbao (ibid.: 30) suggests that the fonts at Arriano, Morillas and Zuazo de Cuartango may be by the same workshop or master. Bilbao (ibid.) cites entries in López de Guereñu and in Portilla. Noted in Plazaola Artola (2008?). Noted and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/alava_ARRIANO.pdf] [accessed 28 February 2023]: "hermosa pila bautismal, datada en el siglo xiii, con la copa completamente cubierta de decoración geométrica incisa. La copa descansa en un pie formado por medias columnas, sin capiteles, adosadas a un núcleo central. Las basas, molduradas y con decoración de semicírculos en la parte inferior, forman una base cuadrada. Abrazan la copa cuatro bandas decorativas. La superior se ornamenta con cuadrados cuyos fondos se han rayado, con líneas verticales uno y horizontales en el contiguo, a modo de encestado. La segunda franja muestra una sarta de círculos con botones radiantes al centro. En la tercera se dispone una línea de rosetas geométricas de seis pétalos. La banda inferior se decora con triángulos incisos inscritos. Otras pilas bautismales de pueblos cercanos, en el mismo valle de Kuartango –Urribarri y Zuhatzu de Kuartango–, presentan características similares a las comentadas en la pila de Arriano." Although the sources above describe it as Romanesque the shape of the basin and the decoration suggest a later date. No cover present but the upper rim retains metal anchorings from an earlier cover.
