Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1994) as a Romanesque baptismal font of the second half of the 12th century, believed to the be the oldest font in the area. The square basin -rounded at the angles and underbowl- has a narrow band of blind arch-heads around the upper rim, and four vertical motifs at the arrises; the stem is also square, though so round it appears almost cylindrical, and ornamented with low-relief arches towards the lower half; the lower base, ornamented with foliage motif, is identified as not being original to this font; the narrow lower base has a vine of sorts on some of the sides but, at least one side, the front, has a winged animal with a broken-off head (?). There is evidence of damage and repair around this lower base area. The front of the basin has a metal staple to secure the cover to; one of the the four piping or ribs at the angles (front side, left angle) is different from the others and has a flat rounded ending at the top; there is damage to the rim in that same area. Bilbao (ibid.) cites entries in the Catálogo Monumental de la Diócesis de Vitoria and in Portilla. Mentioned in passim in Ocón Alonso (1993). García de Castro Valdés ([s.d.] 1998?] notes medieval quadrangular fonts in Spain at Beloncio, Bullaso, San Isidoro de Leon, Villanueva de Valdecarzana (suggested date in the 11th century); Armentia, Bustasur, Dosante, Gormaz, Quintanillabon, Rosales, Santillan del Agua, Soto de Bureba (suggested date in the 12th or 13th century); Ripodas and Turrillas (suggested date in the 13th century). Noted in Plazaola Artola (2008?). Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/alava_ARMENTIA.pdf] [accessed 28 June2024] as a mid-12th century font consisting of a square basin raised on an unrelated piece of the same period ["En ese brazo meridional del crucero puede admirarse una severa pero elegante pila bautismal románica, alojada anteriormente en la sacristía del lado norte.
There is no cover present but the basin has a metal staple for anchoring a cover to the side.
