There are five entries for Shalbourne [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU3163/shalbourne/] [accessed 26 May 2015], neither of which mention cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period here. Noted in the Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924 ): "The nave is the oldest part of the building, dating probably from the 12th century. [...] The font is old and consists of a plain octagonal stone bowl moulded on the underside and has a small pyramidal oak cover which preserves traces of colour." The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: SU3157063511] (1966) notes: "Font, medieval, octagon with lead lining inscribed March 1688, and conical cover of 1680." Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Octagonal, the lead lining inside turned outside over the rim and decorated with little circles." [NB: the dating on the lining need not refer to the font itself]
