No individual entry found for Great Harwood in the Domesday survey. The entry for this township in the Victoria County History (Lancaster, vol. 6, 1911) notes: "The parochial chapel of St. Lawrence has been mentioned under the date 1390 [...] The commissioners of 1546 certified that Richard Wood, priest, was incumbent of the chantry; he had licence to christen, marry and bury and to minister the sacraments to the neighbouring inhabitants, who numbered 400 'houselinge people.' [...] The ancient invocation of the chapel has long been changed to that of the Hesketh chantry, St. Bartholomew. [...] The font now in use stands under the tower, and has on one of its eight sides the initials and date I E 1662. The other sides have traceried panels." Cox & Harvey (1907) list this one as a Restoration baptismal font dated 1662. Pevsner (1969) notes: "Under the tower a font of 1663, Octagonal, with square panels, mostly with basic blank cusped arches in pairs." Hartwell & Pevsner (2009) adds: "The panelled base does not go with it". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SD7338732716] [accessed 14 March 2019] notes: "Church, early C16 with C15 tower and C19 chancel. [...] font dated 1662, with letters "IE"". The Great Harwood Parish web site [www.stbartschurch.org.uk/the-church-its-heritage/] [accessed 14 March 2019] informs: "The font has been moved over the years from the North Aisle to the Tower area and to its present location between the nave and the chancel. Dated 1662, it bears the initials ‘I E’. These are thought to refer to John Eddlestone who was Churchwarden at that time. The cover dates from 1897 and replaced an earlier one from 1820." [cf.
