There are two entries [one multiple-place, the other single place] for Ainderby [Steeple] [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE3392/ainderby-steeple/] [accessed 13 November 2019]; the single entry, in the lordship of Ansketil in 1086, reports a church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914) notes: "The church of Ainderby belonged to Anschitil in 1086 [...] A church of the 12th century or perhaps of earlier origin appears to have occupied the site; the nave was of the size of the present one, without aisles but probably with a south transept and western tower, the chancel being much smaller than the existing one. [...] A general restoration took place in 1870 [...] The octagonal stone font in use is modern, but one dated 1662 is still preserved in the church." The VCH entry (ibid.) shows the location of the two fonts in a plan of the church interior: the old font is shown in the northwest corner of the north aisle, while the modern font is located beneath the tower. Glynne's visit of 18 April 1842 (in Butler, 2007) reports: "The font has an octagonal cup-shaped bowl." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a Restoration baptismal font dated 1662. Morris (1931) reports it as a "disused font". Pevsner (1985) notes: "Font. 1662. Of the familiar type." [NB: Pevsner probably means that the font is made of stone and of the octagonal mounted type]. [NB: the Parish of Middleton, West Yorkshire [http://www.middletonstcross.org.uk/] [accessed 20 October 2007], notes and illustrates a "hexagonal stone font, originally from Ainderby Steeple, Northallerton, and moved from the west end of St. Cross when the Parish Room conversion took place. Carvings around the edge represent the four Gospel writers, as well as Jesus the victorious Lamb of God." [NB: the font illustrated in the Middleton web page as coming from Ainderby Steeple appears to be Victorian -- the 1662 font, on the other hand, appears to have re-instated as the font in use in Ainder by Steeple St Helen's, moved to the tower space, as it is shown in a 2010 photograph taken 4 October, 2010 by Maigheach-gheal [www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2132324] [accessed 13 November 2019]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE3345792098] notes: "Church. C14, C15 and C19 restoration and additions. [...] Carved octagonal font of 1662." The decoration on the font shows, on the basin sides: tree - radiated flower - plant - Greek cross pattee - GM/GS - 1662 - IM; the stem of the base is fluted and has at top and bottom, as well as on the lower base. No cover present.
