There are three entries for [North and South] Hayling [Island] [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/north-and-south-hayling-island/] [accessed 20 June 2018], none of which mentions priest or church in it. This font is not mentioned in White (1878), who does report "a very antique font" in this church, surely a reference to the Anglo-Saxon (?) one [cf. Index entry for South Hayling No. 1]. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The whole building is set out as one design, and was probably in course of construction from the second quarter of the thirteenth century to the end of the third quarter, the chancel being the earliest part. [...] At the west end of the north aisle is the font, with a square Purbeck marble bowl, c. 1200, on a central column and four modern angle shafts with stone capitals and bases." The August 2010 issue of the Parish Newsletter [http://www.haylinganglicans.co.uk/stmary/newsletter/stm_news_aug_10.htm] [accessed 12 August 2011] notes: "The font, standing at the west end of the north aisle, will be re-positioned on a central west/east axis." Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble: "bowl with four panels on each face; the subsidiary shafts are modern" [source given: VCH, 3, 1908]. [NB: a second font, probably Anglo-Saxon, is listed in this town -- cf. Index entry for South Hayling No. 2]
