There are two entries for Staunton [-on-Wye] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SO3645/staunton-on-wye/] [accessed 13 December 2018] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907: 228) list a baptismal font of the Decorated period here. Described and illustrated in the inventory of Herefordshire (1931-1934, vol. III: p. 185 and pl. 56): "Font[...]: round cup-shaped bowl with moulded necking, round stem and moulded base, early 13th-century." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO3754644833] notes: "Parish church. C12, C13 and C14, partly rebuilt in 1720 with later alterations. [...] Font is probably early C13. Tapered round bowl and and
cylindrical stem." The entry for this church in Herefordshire Through Time [https://htt.herefordshire.gov.uk/her-search/monuments-search/search/Monument?ID=7235] [accessed 13 December 2018] notes: "Norman south doorway, capitals and detail of architecture point to late 12th century date. [...] he bowl of the font has probably been cut down. The basin is bucket shaped. The mouldings suggest a late Norman date, 1170-80. The cover is modern. The whole font has been painted grey. These alterations may date to the repair of the church in 1867." [NB: the HTT gives "Article in serial: Marshall, George. 1950. Fonts in Herefordshire, Part II. Transactions of the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club. {3}. Pages 46." as source. The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2018), however, dates the font to the 12th century: "At the W end of the nave towards the S side is a 12thc font consisting of an unlined chalice-shaped bowl on a later moulding of cima profile, with a cylindrical stem, perhaps original, on a chamfered drum base with no step. The interior of the bowl is chamfered at the upper rim". The CRSBI entry (ibid.) further notes: " for the Herefordshire Sites and Monuments Record the central capital is ‘so enormous and crude that it looks 11th century’. They also suggest a date 0f 1170-80 for the font, and suggest that the bowl may have been cut down. The upper rim is certainly suspiciously crisp."
