Font Notes:
There is an entry for [Upton] Snodsbury [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SO9454/upton-snodsbury/] [accessed 21 October 2014], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Miller (1890) describes the church as being of 13th, 14th and 15th century styles, restored in 1873, but mentions no font in it; he lists the first recorded vicar as "Adam Aubrey de Breykenoke", in 1296. The font is described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a "good font" of the 15th century, "with various designs on the eight panels". The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The church of Upton Snodsbury was probably originally a chapelry of the church of Holy Cross, Pershore, for until 1426 the inhabitants had to take their dead to Pershore for burial. (fn. 69) Its advowson may have been acquired by the priory of Great Malvern with that of St. Andrew's, the earliest recorded presentation to Upton Snodsbury being made by the prior and convent in 1297. [...] The western half of the north wall of the nave appears to be of early 13th-century date. The chancel was entirely rebuilt in the 14th century and the west tower added early in the following century. [...] The font in the south aisle is also of the 15th century with moulded base and octagonal bowl; four faces bear the symbols of the Evangelists and the others have quatrefoils, two with a rose in the centre and two with a face." Noted in Pevsner (1968): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with quatrefoil panels enclosing the Signs of the Evangelists, heads, and flowers." Brooks & Pevsner (2007) date it "Late Perp[endicualr]". The Parish' web site [http://www.uptonsnodsbury.org/Church-history.htm] [accessed 18 September 2008] notes: "The font dates from 1350 and is octagonal in shape. Four of the sides depict the signs of the four evangelists (these being a man, a lion, a calf and an eagle). Three of the other sides show hatted heads and the eighth a Tudor Rose." The order of the symbols on the sides of the basin is, strating on the west side [Left to Right]: 1)Matthew's angel holfing a scroll; 2)human head, bearded, wearing a hat; 3)Luke's winged ox holding a scroll; 4)human head, bearded, wearing a hat; 5)John's eagle holding a scroll; 6)a Tudor rose; 7)Mark's winged lion holding a scroll; 8)human head, bearded, wearing a hat. It should be noted that the carving on some sides of the basin, especially those alternating with the Evangelists'symbols, is suspiciously fresh, and the style itself is not typical of the period or the area.
