There is a 1808 watercolour of this font by John Buckler (1770-1851), formerly in the B.M., now in the B.L. [ref.: Add. 36408, f. 7]. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 notes: "the font is lofty, and covered with a profusion of tracery and paneling." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Described in Buck (1951) as similar to the font at nearby North Bradley, "of later date, about the end of the fifteenth century, with rather more ornamentation on the panels"; Buck (ibid.) gives details of each panel, where the symbols of the Evangelists alternate with those of the Passion. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 7, 1953) notes: "Remains of a 13thcentury building are said to exist in the present tower and some capitals and shafts of that period were discovered at the restoration of 1846–8. [...] The tower and spire [...] are thought to be of the 14th century. The main body of the church, however, the existing casing of the tower, and the octagonal font with emblems of the Passion on its panels are of the late 15th century." The VCH entry (ibid.) has a footnote referring to Buckler's 1908 drawing of the font [cf. supra]. Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], big, with shields in quatrefoils. On them the signs of the Evangelists, the Cross, the Instruments of the Passion, and three scourges." Noted and illustrated in the Parish web site [http://www.stjamestrowbridge.co.uk/history.php] [accessed 18 January 2012]: "The stone font is 15th century. On its sides are carved symbols of the four Gospel writers. Clockwise, Matthew (an angel), John (an eagle), Mark, (a lion), Luke (a bull). Between these are carved details from the Crucifixion of Jesus: clockwise, the cross; whips for scourging; nails, spear and sponge; seamless robe and coins or dice." The octagonal basin has deeply-carved sides with colonnettes at the angles, and is of the type in which the lower basin sides overhang; the octagonal pedestal base has trefoiled niches on the sides, and there are colonnettes at the angles here as well; the font is raised obn a wide octagonal plinth. The inner basin well is lead-lined.
