There is an entry for [Bower]Chalke and [Broad] Chalke [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/bowerchalke-and-broad-chalke/] [accessed 13 September 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it [NB: curiously the entry reports "men of the church" as sharing the lordship of this place in 1066, prior to the Conquest; they appear to have been associated with Wilton abbey; Wilton abbey retained the shared lordship after the Conquest, as did many of the religious houses]. Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with amply cusped quatrefoils enclosing roses, leaf, shields, and on the side a quatrefoil of shells." The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 13, 1987) notes: "Work on the church perhaps began c. 1258, when the keeper of Savernake forest was ordered to provide the vicar of Chalke with timber for the fabric of his church. [...] The oldest parts of the church, the chancel, the north transept, and part of the west wall, including the doorway, date from the late 13th century. [...] Registers of baptisms begin in 1538"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. The font is noted and illustrated by Trish Steel (2008): "The arms on the font are those of Lord Audley of Fonthill with carved roses, leaves and scallop shells". The font has visible damage to the lower basin and lower base; the octagonal plinth with kneeling stone appears contemporary with the font. The wooden cover is octagonal pyramidal; the lower part has a crenellated border and bears the popular inscription from Matthew, 19:14: "Suffer children..."; the panels of the sides are decorated with trefoiled and hexafoiled shapes; Greek cross finial; modern.
