Church Notes: "church of ST. MARY, so called in 1763" [cf. VCH entry in bib.]
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 16, 1999) notes: "Chilton Foliat church was probably standing in the 12th century. [...] The nave is long, has a thick north wall, and was probably built in the 12th century; there are reset fragments of 12thcentury billet moulding above the windows in the upper stage of the tower. [...] parish registers are complete from 1575"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. The National Archives site, Wiltshire and Swindon, entry for this church [http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=190-prchfolstm&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18] [accessed 1 September 2008] lists an item in their records that may provide more information on the old font; the entry is listed as: "Letters about the old font (then in Southwick church) with photograph. PR/Chilton Foliat: St. Mary/3026/16 1938". The Find a Church site entry for Southwick St. Thomas [http://www.findachurch.co.uk/churches/st/st85/stthomassw/] [accessed 1 September 2008] notes: "The font is medieval - originally from Chilton Foliat". The Wiltshire Community History site [http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getchurch.php?id=767] [accessed 1 September 2008] notes: "the church […] has a genuine 14th century font from Chilton Foliat. In deference to the strong Baptist principles of the village there is a tank for baptism by immersion in the west end of the church." The present font is illustrated in the www.oodwooc.co.uk web site [accessed 1 September 2008] and it is definitely modern, not at all the font reported by Cox & Harvey. The present font consists of an octagonal basin of vertical sides deeply carved with Biblical scenes; raised on an octagonal pedestal base. The Wiltshire Community History site [http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getconcise.php?id=53] [accessed 1 September 2008] notes of the modern font: "a striking font of 1850 carved by a local clergyman who later turned Jesuit".
