Scene Description: Source caption: "Font, St James the Great, Bratton. Looking very fresh and new it is in fact a Norman bowl, set on a 15th century base. It was recut in 1860, so it appears much newer. There are traces of a medieval iron hinge and lock, used to protect the baptismal water."

No individual entry found for this Bratton in the Domesday survey. The ancient font here is documented in an 1806 watercolour by John Buckler (1770-1851). Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Norman, entirely re-cut, circular, with scallops and a band of horizontal V-shapes above." Classed in Buck (1950) as one of a group of "Middle Norman circular Fonts, c. 1100-1150" in Wiltshire: "The carving has been recut. The pedestal is late 14th century and dates from the time when the church was practically reconstructed, c. 1400." The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2019) notes: "The only 12thc carving is the font which has been over-restored. [...] The font bowl dates from the 12thc but seems to have been heavily restored in the 19thc, probably when the Perpendicular-style base was created. It is decorated with a 0.08m high chevron band around the top, above a row of scallops 0.14m high." The Wiltshire Community History page [http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getchurch.php?id=987] [accessed 14 August 2008] notes: "The font is either Saxon or early Norman but has been restored and mounted on a modern plinth." The cylindrical basin has tapering sides and is decorated with a row of nested chevron sandwiched between mouldings at the upper basin side; below is a band of scallop with vertical projections that create a rib pattern all around; the underbowl is chamfered and plain, slightly concave; the octagonal pedestal and the plinth appear modern. Plain round wooden cover; modern.
