Reader (1835: 25) adds Meriden to the Domesday survey entry under Ailespede [Alspath]. in the land of countess Godiva; the village became known as 'Meriden' from the 15th century on. The Domesday survey entry for Alspath [variant spelling] [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP2582/alspath/] mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Decorated period in this church. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 4, 1947) notes: "The church of Alspath was confirmed to the monks of Coventry Priory c. 1160 by Ivo de Allespath, [...] The chancel and nave are of 12th-century origin [...] The font of the 15th century has an octagonal bowl with a moulded top edge, quatrefoil panelled sides inclosing alternately shield and foliage centres, and a hollowed under-side with trefoiled panels. The stem has similar panels."
