There are two entries for Chessington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ1763/chessington/] [accessed 16 December 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Early English period here [C&H use the spelling "Chessingston"]. The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes: "The church of Chessington has always been a chapel to Malden, and was confirmed with that church to Merton Priory by Eudo de Malden [NB: elsewhere in the VCH Eudo de Malden is mentioned as holding land at Malden/Maldon "in the reign of Henry II", i.e., 1154-1189] [...]] The south aisle was added in 1870, and the north vestry is also modern, but the rest of the building dates from the beginning of the 13th century, with later 13th-century alterations [...] The font has a 13th-century moulded base from which rise a modern circular stem and four small detached shafts supporting a modern square bowl."
