Scene Description: Source caption: "St. Peter's Church, Church Street, Old Woking. A very interesting church, with different parts dating from many different centuries. The north and west walls of the present nave date from the earliest Norman part of the church, and are 11th century, having been built in the reign of King William I ("the Conqueror"). There is also a very old door which has been dated by dendrochronology to the reign of King Henry 1 of England (1100-1135)."

There are two entries for Woking [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ0058/woking/] [accessed 21 October 2015], one of which mentions a church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Norman period in this church. The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes: "The earliest part of the building dates from the beginning of the 12th century [...] The font is modern, of carved and panelled stone on marble shafts." The present font is 19th-century, of neo-Gothic style; it consists of a basin raised on a central shaft with outer colonnettes. Modern low pyramidal cover. [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the medieval of this church reported in C&H above].
