There is an entry for this Hambledon [variant spelling] in the Domesday church [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU9638/hambledon/] [accessed 13 December 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Allen (1831) writes: "The basin of the font is cut in a large solid round block of stone, the sides of which are divided into compartments, in each of which is a cross fitchée." Noted in Brayley (1850): "The ancient font is of Sussex marble, neatly sculptured." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. [NB: C&H use the form "Hambleden", but Hambleden is located in Buckinghamshire and is listed in this Index with a Norman font as well]. The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes that the church "is a small building almost entirely rebuilt in 1846", and describes the present font: "octagonal and modern, is a copy of that in Bosham Church, Sussex. The original font appears to have been of 11th or 12th-century date and to have resembled in design that in the neighbouring church of Alfold." The VCH (ibid.) adds that a description of the old church in Cracklow (1824) noted: "The basin of the font is cut out of a solid block of stone."
