Font Notes:
No entry found for this Ewhurst in the Domesday survey. Allen (1831) writes on the font in this church: "at the west-end is a square font, with a cross en saltire in each face." In Brayley (1850): "The font is ancient, but stands on a modern column; it is a stone bason, of a square form, and has a saltire, or St. Andrew's cross sculptured on each face." Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a square baptismal font of the Decorated period. They cite Manning & Bray's (1804) description "as having a cross saltire on each side". Noted in the Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911): "The font has been very much restored with roman cement, but the square bowl appears to be of 12th-century date and is of very crude design. The flat faces are ornamented with saltire ornaments of clumsy rolls. The four supporting columns are modern." The web site of the Diocese of Guilford [www.cofguilford.org.uk] gives the date of the font as "13th or 14th century", more in line with C&H's Decorated period dating above.
