Berzosa (2005) dates this font to the 9th century or earlier. Noted and illustrated in Kaplan ([2007?]). The entry for this church in Oscar M. Ruiz Pérez, in Cantabria Románica [www.cantabriaromanica.com/articulos/santa-maria-de-valverde] [accessed 6 March 2021] notes: "En el interior del templo se encuentra una pila bautismal de forma semiesférica con decoración de cuatro pétalos dentro de un círculo." Baptismal font in the rock church of Valdeverde; it consists of a round tub-shaped basin ornamented with a roll moulding around the upper rim; the sides of the basin have two (?) motifs, at opposite ends: one of them is the type that can be read either as a Greek cross in a circle, or as a four-leaf floral in a circle; the other, looks like an unfinished floral motif [NB: it has been suggested that the font may have been re-tooled, hence the partial motif, but the surface of the stone appears to indicate that it is an unfinished motif]. The basin is raised on a broad round pedestal. [NB: this font is reminiscent of some of the early fonts of Britain, to which have been attributed Anglo- Saxon or early-Norman dating (e.g.: the one at Morwenstow, in Cornwall - cf. Index entry], although we should not forget Bond's (1908) warning about assigning undue early dates to crude works. The general shape and form would fit in the Romanesque of a later period, even the 12th or 13th century. No cover present.
