Church Notes: excavation started in 1934 by Cayetano de Mergelina; declared Monumento Histórico-Artístico in 1979; generally dated around the reign of Recaredo (i.e., 587-602)
Described and illustrated in Palol (1967): a rectangular sunkent font consisting of a cylindrical well and two arms [East-West], each arm with four steps for access; the font is finished in whitewash and crushed or particled ceramic, as some other fonts in the Peninsula. Palol dates the complex to the end of the 6th or first quarter of the 7th century and cites C. de Mergelina as source. In Fontain (1973-1977). In Khatchatian (1982). A quadrangular sunken baptismal font of the Visigothic period provided with steps at opposite ends. Similar to others at Vega del Mar, Idanha Velha, etc. [source: www.anthropos.galeon.com]. Located on the north side of the basilica, the baptistery contains a baptismal piscina of octagonal shape, though almost rounded by erosion.
