There are two entries for [Nether] Stowey [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST1839/nether-stowey/] [accessed 2 April 2018], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period in this church. The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with rosettes inscribed in pointed quatrefoil panels; there are round quatrefoil motifs on the underbowl sides; the stem is octagonal with mouldings at both ends; the lower base is moulded and splayed. The wooden cover is in the shape of a low octagonal pyramid with a cross finial; it is modern [NB: an additional baptismal font, originally from Charlinch, is reported to have been placed in the churchyard of Nether Stowey St. Mary's ca. 1986 when the Charlinch church was deconsecrated -- cf. Index entry for Charlinch]]. Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: ST1967439636] reports: "Restored octagonal font of C15". The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 5, 1985) notes: "A Domesday estate held by Winegod the priest [...] may be identified with the former settlement of Budley, east of the present church of Stowey. [...] The ownership of the estate by a priest, [...] the existence later of one and perhaps two dependent chapels, Dodington [...] and St. Michael's by the castle,[...] and claims to tithes in Otterhampton, [...] are characteristics of minster status. It was known by 1189 as the church of Stowey [...] An incumbent rector was recorded in the late 12th century [...] The medieval church was a small building, with a nave of three bays, its last additions evidently dating from the 14th century"; no font is mentioned in the VCH entry.
