Described in Rutter (1829): "The font is octagonal with a large recess, and is enriched with sculpture of an early age", a description repeated verbatim in The Gentleman's Magazine (issue of 3 February 1830, p. 105). Over thirty years later The Gentleman's Magazine (issue of Jan. 1862) reports on the re-opening of St. Michael's on 16 October 1861 after an almost complete rebuilding; among the restored items within the church, "The font has been cleansed of innumerable coats of whitewash, and is placed near the south porch." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period.
