Anderson (1864) notes that "Hugh de Say gave this church 'of St. John of Suthestokes' to Haughmond Abbey" [probably towards the end of the 12th century, as De Say is believed to have died ca. 1190; the church itself may date from just after the Conquest]. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. Newman & Pevsner (2006) do not mention a font at all in this church, but they do indicate that the church was "Norman in origin, largely demolished late in the Civil War and rebuilt in 1654 (nave) and 1664 (chancel). With its almost complete set of furnishings of c.1665". [NB: not clear whether the font noted in Cox & Harvey above is still in this church; nor do we have any information on the original font of the early church]
