view of church exterior - churchyard, cemetery - detail

Scene Description: "The female figure of this Sheela-na-gig is indistinct due to the age of the relief. The upper torso and head of a figure are visible, the lower half is more weathered, however the legs and vulva of the female figure can be discerned" John Harding, of The Sheela na Gig Project believes it is not a Sheela

Font Notes:
There is an entry for Cleobury [Mortimer] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SO6775/cleobury-mortimer/] [accessed 31 January 2018]; it mentions a priest in it but not a church, though there must ghave been one there. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Early English period in this church. Anderson (1864) notes that this church " perhaps originally founded by Queen Edith, was, in 1179, given by Hugh de Mortiner to that abbey of Wigmore he founded" [NB: Anderson refers to Edith of Wessex (ca. 1029-1075), wife of Edward the Confessor]. No font mentioned in Newman & Pevsner (2006). [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of this church]
