view of font and cover

Scene Description: unfortunately the source photograph only shows a small portion of the font cover, but enough to gather that it was of the rim-buffet type, made of wood, conical in shape, with panelled sides, some of which probably opened at the front to give access to the interior basin

Additional Comments: famous person font: probably the font where Tomas de Zumalacárregui, the Carlist general, was baptised; also Serapio Mugica Zufiria, historian -- have asked Montse to contact Marta Molto for us re dating of the font and asking for pics and permit (e-mail of 26 Feb 2009) -- restored font (a heavey-handed restoration)
Font Notes:
Mugica Zufiria (1918) notes this as an ancient baptismal font. Noted with a reported pre-Romanesque date (8th-century) in he Auñamendi Eusko Entziklopedia [www.euskomedia.org/aunamendi/102143/97297] [accessed 8 March 2015]: "primitiva pila bautismal decorada con motivos geométricos como rosetas y círculos entrelazados, que ha sido fechada en el siglo VIII y está colocada en el centro de la nave central" [NB: an undated [1960s-1970s?] photograph in this source shows a small portion of the font cover, but enough to gather that it was of the rim-buffet type, made of wood, conical in shape, with panelled sides, some of which probably opened at the front to give access to the interior basin]. Noted and illustrated by Arantza Cuesta Ezeiza in Gure Gipuzkoa [www.guregipuzkoa.eus/wp-content/gallery/arantzacuestaezeiza/1147255.jpg] [accessed 17 June 2020]: "Iglesia parroquial de San Andrés. Pila bautismal [...] Ubicación: Presbiterio Estilo: Prerrománico Pila bautismal de piedra arenisca. Se levanta sobre un pie cilíndrico. La copa semiesférica está adornada con delgadas costillas formando casetones con motivos de círculos radiados, menores secantes y cruz enmarcada en círculo. Está considerada como una joya." The font is noted and illustrated by Marta Moltó in the Guipuzcoa pages of the Romanico Aragones site [www.arquivoltas.com/30-Guipuzcoa/01-Ormaiztegui.htm] [accessed 26 February 2009] with suggested Visigothic dating. Plazaola Artola (2008?) suggests it might be pre-Romanesque. The font is probably neither, showing characteristics of a 12th- 13th-century Spanish late-Romanesque work; the presence of a Visgothic-like motif on the font should not be used to date it, as most of the other characteristics of the ornamentation are of much later date and, as Bond (1908) warns, fonts must be dated to the latest motif on them, not the earliest.
