Church Notes: early-13thC church
Ilustrated in Calderón Escalada (1971). Described and illustrated in García Guinea (1998: 5) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period of great interest for the appearance of astral symbols on its sides: he identifies the Moon, as well as the Sun with well incised rays all around. The stone font consists of a roughly cylindrical basin with a chamfered underbowl, raised on a round-to-square base; the basin has a pair of roll mouldings below the rim; the sides have several motifs and symbols of varied sizes, some identified in GG above; towards the bottom of the side ia a zig-zag pattern between two incised grooves, all around; the round-to-square base has mouldings that may actually be reptiles at the angles, and sumbols inscribed in circles, the symbols probably Maltese crosses or floral motifs, too worn to categorically identified. There is no cover present but the upper rim shows evidence of archorings from an old cover.
