Noted in Eyton (1859- ). Noted in Lee (1861): "Another curious relic of days gone by is a very handsome ancient font of stone, raised on a stout stone pillar and richly decorated with florid tracery. The top is square and bears the following odd Latin inscription in monkish rhyme: 'Hic male primus homo Fruitur cum conjuge pomo'. In English: 'Here the first man wickedly enjoys, with his wife, the apple.' This inscription would have been very suitable for a font, had there been a picture of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit". Anderson (1864) notes: "There is a curious ancient font in this church". Romilly Allen (1888) gives the text of the inscription on this font and dates the font to the 12th century. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy baptismal font of the Norman period. C&H (ibid.) report an inscription on a 12th-century sculpture [cf. inscription area]. Noted in Newman & Pevsner (2006): "Font. Big , square, Norman. In the shape of a block capital. Decoration wih rosettes, two upright volutes back-to-back etc. The inscription on the rim is medieval, but later than the font. It reads: HIC MALE PRIMUS HOMO FRUITUR CUM CONIUGE POMO (Here wickedly the first man enjoyed the apple with his wife). Why should this be inscribed on a font?". The basin is raised on a cylindrical pedestal base with a thick moulding at the top; this pedestal is now split vertically in two halves.
